In a standout lecture at CityUHK, Professor David D. Yao explored how integrating carbon costs into supply chains and hedging emissions risk can accelerate the shift to clean technology, bridging AI, finance, and sustainability.

Professor David D. Yao, a HKIAS Senior Fellow and a distinguished academic renowned for his extensive research and contributions in the fields of industrial engineering and operations research, visited the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) from 14 to 24 March 2025. His visit featured a series of engaging sessions.
The visit began with a warm welcome from Professor Anderson Shum, Vice-President (Research) at CityUHK, on 17 March. During the week, Professor Yao held discussions with various scholars at CityUHK, including Professor Shuk Han Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) and Associate Vice-President (Research), Professor Youhua Frank Chen, Head of the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations, and Professor Chuangyin Dang, Head of the Systems Engineering. These discussions aimed to explore future collaborative opportunities, strengthen ties, and foster joint research initiatives between CityUHK and Columbia University.
A key highlight of the visit was a "Mini Workshop on AI and Fintech" presented by Professor David D. Yao, Professor Houmin Yan, Chair Professor of Management Sciences in the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations, and Professor Guangwu Liu, Professor in the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Choon Ling Sia, Associate Dean of Research at the College of Business.
Professor Yao delivered a compelling talk on "Emission Trading System and Risk Hedging." His presentation focused on integrating carbon emission costs into supply chain production decisions and developing dynamic hedging strategies within the European Union's Emission Trading System (EU ETS). He also discussed the potential impact of these strategies on the adoption of clean technologies and their connection to tokenized, real-world clean-energy assets.
In the workshop, Professor Houmin Yan discussed "AI-Driven Credit Risk Management Research and Development at AIFT for Amazon Seller Financing,," and Professor Guangwu Liu presented "Automated Market Making: Research and Innovation at AIFT."
The "Mini Workshop on AI and Fintech" provided an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and students. CityU remains committed to fostering innovation and excellence in the fields of artificial intelligence and financial technologies. For more information about the lecture, please click here.
